This weekend marks the 30th Annual NKF Surf Festival here in Cocoa Beach; the festival was founded by Richard K. Salick three decades ago to help raise awareness about kidney health, and to raise funds for the National Kidney Foundation. Richard suffered from kidney failure during the peak of his surfing career, and after his brother donated a kidney, he set out to raise awareness for kidney disease and other kidney ailments. This year’s events will begin on Thursday, September 3 with a VIP, Sponsor, and Press party followed by competitor registration on Friday. Competitive events will begin on Saturday and continue through Labor Day at the Cocoa Beach Pier. The NKF Surf Festival is the largest charitable surfing event in the world; while the proceeds were initially small, just $129, the Salick family has since raised over $5 million for kidney patients throughout Florida.
