Happy October! Here on the Space Coast, October is one of our favorite months. In October, our average high temperatures gradually drop from the mid-80s into the upper-70s, and our humidity drops bringing mostly clear, dry skies. October is the perfect month to visit the beaches: the weather is mild and sunny, and the beaches are less crowded than prime vacation season.
There are many great community events that happen during October as well, from pumpkin patches and craft shows to special fall-themed events. Boo at the Zoo is a popular family activity on weekends leading up to Halloween; Rockledge Gardens’ Fall Festival and ongoing farmer’s market is a great opportunity to pick up fresh fall produce; and Cocoa Village’s Fall Art and Craft Fair is a community favorite.
This year, October will also see several rocket launches. ULA and SpaceX will kick the month off with two launches during the first week, and a third scheduled for later this month. Be sure to check our blog for more information and launch times. Other celestial events in October include a full moon on October 5, the Draconid Meteor Shower from October 6-10, and the beginning of the Orionid Meteor Shower that lasts from October 2 through November 7.

As Port Canaveral welcomes a new CEO next Monday, February 15, locals will be watching to see what direction he intends to take and how he will handle the issues left in the wake of John Walsh’s departure. Under Walsh’s direction, the Port has grown into a major focal point for the local tourism economy, as well as building up the Port’s cargo industry. The main concerns facing the new CEO, John Murray, include continuing the Port’s economic growth with the hope of someday overtaking the Port of Miami, increasing the cargo action including the controversial plans for a new rail service, traffic congestion issues, and the continuing development of The Cove district and attractions.
One the most exciting developments in the works is the Brevard Zoo’s plans for an aquarium, proposed last August. The Zoo’s director presents a vision for the aquarium “as having both indoor and outdoor exhibits, with a focus on the Space Coast, the Indian River Lagoon, the St. Johns River, Port Canaveral and local marine life.” The plans intend to focus on Central Florida’s ecosystems, especially on the wildlife of the St. Johns River. The Zoo is currently working closely with Port officials to continue developing the plan.

This summer, the Brevard Zoo is keeping the gates open late for Summer Saturday Nights. Every Saturday night through the end of July, the Zoo will remain open till 9 p.m. including activities such as kayaking, riding the train, and feeding the giraffes; in addition to the regular exhibits, there will also be live music and a special animal encounter. While most exhibits will remain open throughout the evening, some will close earlier: “Most of our Zoo animals are on exhibit until dusk, but some need their beauty sleep and must turn in early for the night including our birds and butterflies in the aviary. Our rhinos will be off exhibit at night but some of our giraffe herd and both zebras will be on exhibit.”
The Zoo boasts a number of exhibits including Expedition Africa, Wild Florida, the Aviary, and an extensive children’s educational play area and petting zoo. The Zoo is also very active in conservation and education, and leads several efforts to protect and restore fragile habitats like florida mangroves, oyster beds, and native wildlife, and is also home to The Sea Turtle Healing Center. If you are interested in learning more, the Zoo offers a number of behind-the-scenes sessions, seminars, and educational camps.
