Norwegian cruise lines recently announced that Port Canaveral will be home to the second-largest ship in their fleet, beginning in 2016. In addition to Norwegian’s Spirit, the Epic will “more than double the line’s capacity there from the 2,018-passenger Spirit.” The ship will offer passengers a number of itineraries to the eastern and western Caribbean including the Bahamas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Cozumel. “The 1,081-foot ship features a multislide water park, 20 dining options, spa and bowling alley and will debut a Broadway show production this fall…”
Port Canaveral will also be home to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis in 2016, announced earlier this year. The increased activity from Port Canaveral of these floating behemoths can be attributed to the continuing efforts made by the Port to improve customer services and to the completion of the new Cruise Terminal 1, which was built specifically to accommodate Epic- and Oasis-class ships. This is a historic moment for Port Canaveral: “It will be the first time an Oasis-class ship has used a U.S. home port other than Port Everglades [Fort Lauderdale].” The continuing development of Port Canaveral is great news for travelers and locals alike, providing variety for the Port’s regular customers and bringing business to the local economy.
