SpaceX will be launching a Falcon 9 carrying Dragon spacecraft and supplies to the International Space Station this Sunday, June 28. “This is the seventh of 14 resupply missions by SpaceX for NASA, delivering food and supplies, including new science experiments and technology research, to the crew aboard the ISS.” The launch will also be carrying the International Docking Adapter, a new docking apparatus that will be used in the future to allow spacecraft like the Boeing CST-100 and SpaceX Crew Dragon to dock safely with the station. SpaceX will also be using the launch to test landing methods which would allow the reuse of parts of the rocket that would otherwise need to be replaced every launch. “A successful landing is not guaranteed due to various difficulties. Challenges include the platform which is only 300 by 100 feet in size and not completely stationary.” Successfully landing the rocket stage will be an important step towards reducing overall spaceflight costs and reducing launch waste.
Weather for the launch is forecasted to be hot and breezy, with a chance of scattered afternoon storms.
